Competing in their first tournament of the season, the Cerritos College wrestling team had four individual champions and took first place at the West Valley Tournament on Saturday. The Falcons, who have won their first eight dual meet matches, compiled 163.5 team points and outscored second place Sacramento City College, who had 132 points. The team will now compete in the Santa Ana Tournament on Saturday.

125 Pounds - Led by freshman Norberto Buenrostro (Citrus Hill HS), who came in second place, the Falcons had two entries at this weight. Seeded #2, Buenrostro opened with a bye and then recorded a pair of wins by pin to advance to the semifinals. He defeated Pedro Sarabia of Bakersfield College, 4-2 to reach the finals, but suffered an injury and had to default in the championship match.

Anthony Vargas was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler 133 Pounds - Most Valuable Wrestler in the tournament, sophomore Anthony Vargas (Citrus Hill HS), won all four of his matches to capture the championship. After a first round bye, Vargas pinned Tanner Robson of Skyline College and then recorded a 15-0 technical fall win against George Torres of Mt. San Antonio College. A 4-2 win in the semifinals against #4-seeded Roy Galvan of Mt. San Antonio sent Vargas (pictured, left) to the finals, where he pinned #3-seed Adrian Marrufo of West Hills College in 5:55.

141 Pounds - Seeded #1, sophomore Richard Pocock (California HS) surrendered only a combined two escape points in his four wins, as he breezed to the championship. After a bye, Pocock earned a 14-0 win over Tommy Dibenedetto of Lassen College and then a 15-0 technical fall win over Jason Stokkeland of Sacramento City College to reach the semifinals. A 7-1 win over #4-seed Aaron Mora (Fresno City College) was followed by a dominant 13-1 win over #2-seeded Clinton McAlestar of Fresno City in the championship match. Freshman Vincent Dehakiz (El Dorado HS) dropped his first match, but won his next two before suffering a 3-0 loss and was eliminated.

149 Pounds - Freshman Wyatt Gerl (Downey Calvary Chapel HS) entered the tournament seeded #1 and won his first four matches to advance to the championships. Facing #2-seeded Dylan Martinez of Fresno City, Gerl came up short in a 7-0 decision and took second place. He recorded pins in his first two matches before a 5-4 win over Casper Sherow of Mt. SAC and a 9-3 victory over #4-seed Alexander Lopez (Sacramento City) advanced him to the finals.

157 Pounds - Although he was defeated in the semifinals, #4-seeded sophomore Kevin James (Redondo Union HS) rebounded in the consolation round and earned a pair of wins, including an 8-3 decision over #5-seed Nathan Pinentel of West Hills to come in third place. Sophomore Dylan Moreno (Downey HS) was seeded #2 and posted a pin in 2:05 in his first match before dropping a 13-5 score, which dropped him to the consolation round. After a 10-9 win over Garrett Heath of Santa Rosa, Moreno was eliminated in a 16-4 loss to #3-seed Josh Annis of Fresno City.

165 Pounds - Freshman Blake Vasquez (Fountain Valley HS) was the third Falcon to win his weight classification, as the #2-seed pulled out a 5-4 win in the finals against #5-seed Ryan Soto of Victor Valley College. It was Soto who defeated #4-seed Kennith Kirk (Elsinore HS), 16-7 in the quarterfinals, but Kirk rebounded to win his next three matches before a 9-3 loss to top-seeded Derek Lee Loy of Sacramento City College in the third place match. Vasquez pinned three of his opponents on his way to the title, including a win in 2:53 over #3-seed Antonio Janrequi of Lassen College in the finals.

174 Pounds - Cerritos had three entries at the weight, with freshman Buzi Turner (Santa Monica HS) recording three wins, including a pair by pinfall and a 12-11 decision.

184 Pounds - Freshman Isaiah Leyva (San Jacinto HS) was seeded #3 and reached the semifinals before suffering a 6-2 loss to eventual champion Reed South of Mt. San Antonio College. Leyva followed the loss with a pin over #5-seed Dupra Goodman of Skyline College in 5:40 to advance to the third place match. He was pinned in 1:11 by Trevor Wright of Sacramento City and finished in fourth place.

197 Pounds - Both Joseph Hieber (John Glenn HS) and Angel Barajas (John Glenn HS) received byes in their first matches, but suffered losses in the next. In the consolation round, Barajas earned two wins in three matches, while Heiber was defeated in his next match.

285 Pounds - The fourth individual champion for the Falcons was freshman David Zavala (Lakewood HS), who was the #2-seed and earned five wins, including a 5-4 decision against #1-seeded Jerrad Kirk of Sacramento City College in the championships. Zavala pinned his first three opponents and picked up a tough 3-2 decision in the semifinals against #3-seed Tristan Smith of Modesto College.
