With several of their regulars held out of competition, the Cerritos College wrestling team took third place at the Santa Ana Tournament on Saturday. The Falcons, who had two individual champions, finished with 102 team points and trailed only Palomar College (124 team points) and Mt. San Antonio College (104). The team will get a little over a week off before they open Southwest Conference competition when they travel to Palomar College on October 12.

125 Pounds - Top-seeded freshman Norberto Buenrostro (Citrus Hill HS) earned a pin in his first match over Eleiseo Medina of Santa Ana College in 1:30, but was defeated in the quarterfinals when he was pinned by Joseph Terriquez of Bakersfield College. In the consolation round, Buenrostro responded with a third period pin over Anthony Torrez of Mt. San Antonio, but was forced to default out of his next match due to an injury. Sophomore Jacob Valdes (Warren HS) lost his first match of the day, and after posting a 2-0 win over Joshua Garcia (East Los Angeles), he was eliminated when he was pinned by John Whisner of Mt. SAC.

133 Pounds - Sophomore Anthony Vargas (Citrus Hill HS) was seeded #1 in the tournament and recorded a 21-4 technical fall over Kyle Jimenez of Fresno City after receiving a pair of byes. In the semi-finals, Vargas came out on the short end of a 5-4 decision against eventual champion Roy Galvan of Mt. SAC. Vargas went on to earn a 10-6 win over Alex Contreras of East Los Angeles and then posted an 8-7 win in the third place match against Adrian Marufo of West Hills College.

141 Pounds - For the second week in a row, sophomore Richard Pocock (California HS) defeated all competition to win the tournament title. Seeded #2, Pocock opened with a 5-0 win over Miguel Flores of Palomar College and followed that by pinning Hunter Minton of Sacramento City College. In the semifinals, he escaped with a 6-5 win against Alberto Garcia of Palomar and capped it off with a 6-5 victory over top-seeded Andrew Gomez of Santa Ana.

149 Pounds - Freshman Wyatt Gerl (Downey Calvary Chapel HS) earned a bonus half point in the team standings with his 16-0 technical fall in his first match, but was then defeated, 8-3 by Mt. SAC's Joseph Dominguez. In the consolation round, Gerl defeated a trio of opponents to reach the third place match, where he lost, 7-2 to Santa Ana's Tristen Steinman, who was the top seed.

157 Pounds - The Falcons other champion on the day was sophomore Dylan Moreno (Downey HS), who was seeded #3. He opened with a bye and then defeated Todd Alexander of Sacramento City, 8-2. That was followed with a 9-6 victory over Vincent Herrera of Mt. San Antonio, which pitted him against top-seeded Nathan Pimentel in the semifinals. Moreno earned an 8-6 win and then won the title with a close 2-0 win against Sean McDonald of Palomar.

165 Pounds - Looking for another champion, freshman Blake Vasquez (Fountain Valley HS) entered as the #1 seed. He received a pair of byes before pinning Andrew Binger of Bakersfield in :55 to reach the semifinals. In that match, Vasquez recorded a 14-6 win against Brandin Tierney of Bakersfield, but was then defeated by #2-seeded Derek Lee Loy of Sacramento City, 7-4 in the finals. Also suffering a loss at the hands of Loy was freshman Kennith Kirk (Elsinore HS), who lost, 12-3 in the semifinals. Kirk rebounded for a pair of pins, :45 seconds over Andrew Binger of Bakersfield and then 4:55 in the third place match against Jacob Alcoebndas of Rio Hondo College.

174 Pounds - The team's lone entry in the weight was freshman Alexander Michel (Lakewood HS), who earned a 6-0 win over Michael Guevarra of West Hills in his first match. He was defeated by Nico Chapman of Sacramento City, 17-4 in the quarterfinals and then eliminated when he was pinned by Max Velex of East LA in the consolation round.

184 Pounds - Freshman Bryant Vasquez (Fountain Valley HS) was seeded #1 and after a pair of byes, pinned Marco Rodriguez of Rio Hondo to reach the semifinals. He lost, 9-2 to Bruce Valdez of Palomar and after an 18-0 technical fall against Gabriel Rodriguez of East LA, he competed in the third place match. Vasquez was in a battle with #2-seeded Zach Ahrensfield of Santa Ana, but came up short in a 17-14 decision.

197 Pounds - Fresman Angel Barajas (John Glenn HS) was one win away from reaching the semifinals, but lost an 11-4 decision to top-seeded Andrew Ramos. In the consolation round, Barajas pinned Richard Senjenis of Rio Hondo and then recorded a 3-1 win against Dion Wilson of Palomar. His road to a third place match ended when he suffered a 5-4 loss to Bakersfield's Zack Mitchell.

285 Pounds - Lone entry Alexander Damschen (Fountain Valley HS) lost his opening match, but responded by pinning Steve Cortez of East Los Angeles in the consolation round. His tournament came to an end with a 4-1 loss to Fresno City College's Angel Mariscal.
