With their 605 team points and five first place finishes, the Cerritos College women's swimming team won the Waterman Festival at Palomar College on Saturday. The Falcons outdistanced second place Chaffey College, who came in second place with 5-7 team points. Next week, the team will swim in the SCC Pentathlon on Friday at Rio Hondo College, while the divers will compete at El Camino College on Saturday.

Winning individual races on the day were freshman Elizabeth Alfaro (Gahr HS) in the 50-yard freestyle and sophomore Amanda Loya (St. Joseph HS) in the 200-yard IM. The Falcons also won three relay races - 350-yard butterfly relay, 350-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard under/over medley relay - to help secure the team championship.

Alfaro's time of 27.20 in the 50-yard freestyle edged second place Kelly Harris of Palomar College, who was timed in 27.29. Sophomore Angela Covarrubias (Paramount HS) placed fourth in the race at 28.04. Loya won the 200-yard IM by six seconds over second place Paulina Dehaan of Palomar with a time of 2:26.50. It was a second place finish for sophomore Stephanie Alfaro (Gahr HS) in the 100-yard butterfly, with a time of 1:12.77, with freshman Breanna Zuniga (California HS) taking sixth place in 1:20.01.

Covarrubias finished in third place in the 100-yard backstroke (1:14.31), with teammates Amanda Rabb (Gahr HS) and Jaymie Rodriguez in fifth and sixth places, respectively in 1:22.14 and 1:22.84. Rabb also finished fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:35.86) and had 69.50 points in the 1-meter diving event, good for third place. In the 1000-yard freestyle, freshman Celesta Ibarra (Gahr HS) placed third in a time of 14:10.25.
