Playing a couple of teams from the Orange Empire Conference, the Cerritos College women's water polo team suffered two losses on Friday at the Chaffey Tournament. The Falcons (3-4) lost a tough 9-8 decision to Cypress College and then were defeated by perrennial state power, Riverside City College, 21-7. On Saturday, the team will play two more games, as they face Fresno City College (8:00 a.m.) and then a 1:50 p.m. contest against San Diego Mesa College.

Cerritos vs. Cypress: After trailing by a pair of goals early on, the Falcons scored three straight times in the second period for a 4-3 advantage. But the Chargers responded with five consecutive goals for an 8-4 advantage with 1:59 remaining in the third period. Cerritos hurt their chances of pulling out the win with 10 turnovers and several missed scoring opportunities. They got to within 9-8 with :42 seconds left on a goal by freshman Vanessa Hinojosa (Bell Gardens HS), but could not get the tying goal before time expired. Hinojosa led the team with three goals, with the tandem of Channon Owens (Kennedy HS) and Jenny Parra (Schurr HS) each scoring twice. Sophomore goalie Amanda Rabb (Gahr HS) posted nine blocks, while Owens led the team in steals (5) and assists (4).

Cerritos vs. Riverside City: Goals were hard to come by against the Tigers, but the Falcons showed some promise, as they had six different players score in the game. Riverside built a 6-2 lead after the first quarter and then led, 12-6 at halftime. Sophomore Breanna Zuniga (California HS) scored twice in the loss, with Rabb posting six blocks and even scored a goal at the end of the game. Zuniga and Claudia Martinez (Roosevelt HS) each had two steals.
