W. Water Polo: Cerritos earns win at tournament

On the second day of the Battle at the Beach Tournament, the Cerritos College women's water polo team earned a win and suffered a loss. In their first game of the day, the Falcons (7-15) defeated Sierra College, 9-7 and then were defeated by Citrus College, 13-8. Both games were played at Cypress College. The team will travel to East Los Angeles College on Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m. South Coast Conference match.

Cerritos vs. Sierra: It was a close match from the beginning, with the Falcons holding a slim 6-5 lead at intermission. The two teams played even in the third quarter, with Cerritos collecting an insurance goal in the fourth period. Freshman Mikaela Padilla (Schurr HS) led a quartet of goal scorers with four tallies in the game and also assisted on three others. Freshman Vanessa Hinojosa (Bell Gardens HS) and sophomore Claudia Martinez (Roosevelt HS) each scored twice in the win, with freshman Maria Figueroa (Schurr HS) leading the team with four steals. Freshman Channon Owens (Kennedy HS) and Jenny Parra (Schurr HS) each recorded three steals, with sophomore goalie Amanda Rabb (Gahr HS) posting five blocks.

Cerritos vs. Citrus: A five-goal second period elevated the Falcons to a 6-4 lead at halftime, but were unable to hold on against the Owls. After being held scoreless in the third period, Cerritos saw Citrus score six times on Rabb (five saves) to come away with the win. Hinojosa led the team with three goals, while Martinez added two goals. The Falcons turned the ball over 15 times in the game.
