After spending 16 seasons as the volleyball head coach, Teresa Velazquez-Ortega continues in her role as the women's locker & equipment specialist, as position she has filled since 1991. Velazquez-Ortega is in charge of maintaining all of the college's women's intercollegiate uniforms, as well as serving the needs of women students who are enrolled in physical education classes. Along with the distribution, maintaining and ordering of equipment for the women's locker room and women's teams, Velazquez is responsible for issuing lockers and keeping a record of all items that come and go from the women's locker room.
Over the course of her career with the Falcons, Velazquez-Ortega is posted a 185-154 (.546) record, while she was named the South Coast Conference Coach of the Year in 2001. Prior to taking over as the head coach, Velazquez-Ortega spent seven seasons as the assistant coach under Jeanine Prindle (four years) and Nancy Welliver (three years). Velazquez-Ortega has been involved with the Cerritos College volleyball program since 1989 when she led the Falcons to a Final Four appearance in the state championships. She led the nation in kills among community college volleyball players that season and was also selected to the Asics All-America Team, as well as to the All-State Tournament Team in 1989 and 1990.
Velazquez-Ortega has extensive international volleyball experience and was a very intense and competitive player in her time. She received her dental degree from National University of Mexico and earned her Master’s degree in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific University. Velazquez-Ortega also spent time as a part-time faculty member. Velazquez-Ortega and her husband Elias, who is also a part-time classified employee in the athletic department; have four children.
