In accordance with the rest of the South Coast Conference, Cerritos College has decided to opt-out of the traditional fall/winter sports for the 2020 season. This week, the presidents of the 12 South Coast Conference colleges unanimously made the decision to opt-out. The recent surge in COVID-19 cases and current pandemic conditions in Los Angeles County potentially jeopardizing the health of student-athletes, college staffs, and their families factored into the difficult announcement.
Those fall sports affected are: football, volleyball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's water polo, men's and women's cross country, wrestling, as well as men's and women's basketball.
Both football (Southern California Football Association) and wrestling (Southern California Wrestling Alliance) are members of different conferences, with Cerritos also making the decision not to compete in those sports for the 2020-21 season.

"These unprecedented times have created hardships for our student-athletes, faculty and staff combined," stated Athletics Director Maria Castro. "With empathy and understanding, our college has made a difficult decision to suspend sports competition in the first part of the spring semester. We will continue to support and provide opportunities to our student-athletes as we monitor this everchanging environment. We plan on holding our classes and practices in the spring and advocate for the return to face-to-face practice and competition for our student-athletes as the state and county will allow."
Earlier this year, the eight Cerritos College spring sports played an abbreviated season although no conference, regional or state championships were competed due to the original March shutdown. As of now, the proposed Spring Sports II season, which would begin in April, 2021, remains a possibility. The deadline for colleges to opt in or out of the Spring Sports II season is February 26, 2021
The conference presidents plan to hold meetings on January 6, 2021 and February 3, 2021 to consider the prospects of going forward with Spring Sports II. Those sports include baseball, softball, men's and women's track and field, men's and women's swimming and men's and women's tennis.
