Beach Volleyball: Cerritos defeats El Camino in exciting match

Closing out their South Coast Conference match schedule, the Cerritos College beach volleyball team posted wins over both College of the Desert (5-0) and El Camino College (3-2) on Friday at Rosie's Dog Beach in Long Beach. With the wins, the Falcons (15-7, 4-4) finished in third place in the standings and defeated the Warriors for the first time in the second year of the program. Next up will be the South Coast Conference Pairs Championship, which will take place next Friday and Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.

The deciding pairs win for Cerritos against El Camino came in the #2 match, where Monserrat Rodriguez (Gahr HS) and Rosie Cazares-Gonzalez (El Rancho HS) came away with a 21-16, 13-21, 15-12 win. The two victories for the pair on the day improved their season record to 12-2 in that position on the ladder. Earning a close victory against the Warriors were the tandem of Herlinda Casanova (St. Joseph HS) and Juliette Casillas (La Serna HS) in the #5 spot, where they came away with a 21-18, 21-17 win, with the duo of Brisa Cortez (Schurr HS) and Nayeli SalasOrtiz (Schurr HS) securing a 21-16, 21-13 sweep in the #3 spot on the ladder.

The Falcons extended El Camino to a third set in the #4 spot, but the tandem of Abby Gutierrez (Downey HS) and Aiyana Sierra (La Mirada HS) fell, 22-24, 21-16, 13-15.

In their win over the Roadrunners, Cerritos recorded a sweep in each of the matches on the ladder, which included Leeya Rubio (Schurr HS) and Josie Navarro (Sierra Vista HS) at the top winning, 21-16, 21-13, while Rodriguez and Cazares-Gonzalez posted a 21-4, 21-12 win. Also coming away with wins on the day were Cortez and SalasOrtiz (21-14, 21-19), while Gutierrez and Sierra locked down a 21-4, 21-10 win. Desert did not have a second player for the #5 matches, so Casanova and Casillas were awarded a 21-0, 21-0 win.
