Beach Volleyball: Dual meet results in Falcons split

Taking on both El Camino College and the LA Harbor Club team on Friday, the Cerritos College beach volleyball team absorbed a tough loss to the host Warriors. The Falcons (13-6, 2-3) suffered a close 3-2 loss to the Warriors, while they defeated the LA Harbor Club team, 4-1 in a non-conference match. Next up will be a rare evening match, as Cerritos travels to Mt. San Antonio College for a 7:00 p.m. conference match next Friday.

In the loss to El Camino (9-9, 2-3), Cerritos dropped a pair of close decisions, while one of their wins was convincing. In the #2 match, the tandem of Monserrat Rodriguez (Gahr HS) and Rosie Cazares-Gonzalez (El Rancho HS) secured a dominant 21-7, 21-9 win, while the pairing of sophomores Abby Gutierrez (Downey HS) and Aiyana Sierra (La Mirada HS) pulled out a close sweep in their #4 match. They registered a 21-18, 21-19 win.

At the top of the ladder, Leeya Rubio (Schurr HS) and Josie Navarro (Sierra Vista HS) came up short in their first set, 19-21 and then couldn't gain any momentum in the second set and fell, 12-21. It was a tight match in the #3 position, with the duo of Brisa Cortez (Schurr HS) and Nayeli SalasOrtiz (Schurr HS) coming up short in a 17-21, 16-21 decision, with Herlinda Casanova (St. Joseph HS) and Juliette Casillas (La Serna HS) the last chance to pull out a team win, but were defeated, 18-21, 18-21.

All four of the wins against LA Harbor Club were sweeps and included a 21-9, 21-14 win for Rodriguez and Cazares-Gonzalez in the #2 position, with Casanova and Casillas coming away with a solid 21-10, 21-11 win. As for Cortez and SalasOrtiz, they turned in a 21-17, 21-17 win with Breanna Lizarraga (Paramount HS) and Evelyn Soto-Castro (Schurr HS) taking over in the #5 spot and came away with a 21-10, 27-25 victory.
