In their first two games of the season, the Cerritos College men's soccer team scored 11 goals and didn't allow any. In their two games at the Hartnell Tournament, the Falcons didn't score any goals, but they didn't allow any, either. On Sunday, the team played to a 0-0 tie against state finalist Fresno City College, which makes their record 2-0-2 on the season. The four consecutive shutouts are one shy of the school record five in a row they recorded covering the end of the 2015 season and start of the 2016 campaign. Cerritos will now travel to Golden West College on Friday for a 3:00 p.m. non-conference game. It was the Rustlers who ended the Falcons season last year with a 2-1 setback in the first round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs.
Although they didn't get on the scroreboard, the Falcons out-shot the Rams (1-1-2), 16-4 on the day and controlled the pace of the game from the outset. In the first half of the game, the team came close in the 22nd minute when sophomore Adrian Becerra (Morningside HS) took on his winger and dribbled his way into the 18-yard box. His lay-off to sophomore Luis Garcia (La Habra HS) went wide and Cerritos looked to regroup.
Fresno City put themselves in a shorthanded situation when they received a red card in the 43rd minute and played the remainder of the game with 10 players. Looking to take advantage of the extra space on the field, the Falcons came out in the second half and missed another great chance. On the play, Garcia played the ball through to freshman Alberto Carrillo (Lynwood HS), who missed out on his breakaway against the goalkeeper when his shot went over the crossbar.
Becerra got in behind the defenders in the 70th minute, but sent his shot right at the goalkeeper. The offensive onslaught continued one after the other, but the Falcons couldn't get one into the net and had to settle for the draw.
Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Aldama (North Torrance HS) recorded his third shutout of the season, as he made four saves.
