For the second season in a row, the Cerritos College men's soccer team has captured the South Coast Conference South Division title. The Falcons (15-0-5, 5-0-2), ranked #1 in the nation by the United Soccer Coaches among Division III (non-scholarship) schools, played to a 1-1 tie with rival Long Beach City College on Thursday. The two teams will play again on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Cerritos in a rescheduled game from October 10. The Vikings (11-4-5, 3-1-3) had a mathematical chance of winning the division, but needed to beat Cerritos twice.
The Falcons got on the board first in the 43rd minute when freshman Alberto Carrillo (Lynwood HS) picked up his second goal of the season. Cerritos took that lead into intermission and looked to add to their lead in the second half. However, Long Beach City was able to sneak a shot past freshman goalkeeper Jordan Aldama (North Torrance HS) in the 62nd minute, which knotted the score. Neither team was able to get on the board for the remainder of the game.
By the end of the game, Cerritos would out-shoot the Vikings, 9-5 with five of their shots being put on goal. Sophomore Luis Garcia (La Habra HS) had two of the shots on goal to lead the team, while Aldama posted two saves.
In the state power points, which determine the seeding for the playoffs, the Falcons are currently #1 and if they maintain that spot after their game against Long Beach City on Saturday, they will receive a bye in the first round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs. Their first game would be on either November 21 or 22.
