In 2019, the Cerritos College men's soccer team advanced to the CCCAA Final Four for the third season in a row and were rewarded with two players receiving All-American honors. The Falcons, who saw their season come to an end with a 1-0 loss to eventual state champion Fresno City College, concluded the season with an 18-3-4 record and were ranked #5 in the country by United Soccer Coaches among Division III (non-scholarship) schools. Additionally, sophomore Bryan Ortega (Paramount HS) was selected 1st Team All-American, while sophomore Kevin Diaz (Connections Academy HS) received 2nd Team accolades for the second season in a row. They are the 14th and 15th players in school history to earn All-American honors.
The team also concluded the season ranked #5 in the country by United Soccer Coaches and fifth in the state by the CCCAA.
"It was a very good season and I'm proud of our guys," said head coach Benny Artiaga. "In most programs, they would be jumping with the type of season we had. Our guys unfortunately could not repeat as national or state champions, but we had an amazing run. Now it's time to get our guys to universities and continue the tradition of successfully transferring our student-athletes."
Ortega finished second on the team with 15 goals and added six assists on the year. A 2nd Team All-South Coast Conference pick as a freshman, Ortega scored 12 of his goals on the road, which included hat tricks at both Taft College and El Camino College. He also produced a two-goal game at Rio Hondo College. In the team's 4-1 win over Oxnard College that sent the team to the Final Four, Ortega posted a pair of assists.
As for Diaz (pictured, left), he led the team in goals (18) and assists (13), which ranked him fourth in the state in both categories. His 49 points on the year ranked him third in the state. Diaz scored goals in six of the final eight games of the season, which accounted for seven go his goals and scored goals in 13 of the team's 25 games. He posted a hat trick against Cuyamaca College and had a pair of goals in three other games. Diaz posted points in 17 games on the year, which included an eight-game point streak.
The two also received 1st Team All-South Coast Conference recognition, with Diaz being named the conference's Offensive Player of the Year for the second season in a row. Joining them on the 1st Team were sophomore defenders Ernie Cueva (Bassett HS) and Eugene Martinez (Delille Academy, Belize) and sophomore midfielder Dominic Valdivia (Loyola HS/Creighton University), while the quartet of Bryan Perez (Simon Rodia HS), Jorge Cardona (Connections Academy HS), Armando Ibarra, Jr. (Downey HS) and Nicholas Correa (Downey HS) were 2nd Team choices.
