M. Track & Field: Five events in the books at SoCal Decathlon Championships

With five of the 10 events at the Southern California Decathlon Championships completed, Cerritos College sophomore Ike Agubata (King-Drew HS) sits in second place. The final five events will take place on Wednesday at Falcon Stadium, with the first event starting at 10:00 a.m.

Through the first five events, Agubata has compiled 3127 points and trails only Derrick Afor of San Bernardino Valley College, who has collected 3380 points. He is also holding off Joshua Godfrey of Southwestern College, who is in third place with 3063 points. The Falcons are also represented by sophomore Andrew Fowler (Los Alamitos HS), who is currently in 11th place with 2806 points, as well as 15th place Chris Oviedo (Warren HS) with 1857 points.

Agubata started the day in eighth place after a 100 meter time of 11.73 earned him just 705 points, although he moved up several sports after collecting 732 points for his long jump of 6.65 meters, which was the second best of the group. He finished off the day with the third best high jump (1.80 meters), good for 637 points. He trailed Affor by just 129 points before the 400 meters, but his time of 55.02 (598 points) dropped him another 114 points.

Fowler's best event on the first day was the shot put, where he turned in the sixth best distance of 9.71 meters, which earned him 468 points.

The final five events on Wednesday are the 110-meter high hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 meters.
