M. Water Polo: Team splits two games at one-day tournament

Hosting their second one-day tournament of the season, the Cerritos College men's water polo team opened up against the top-ranked team in the state, West Valley College and dropped a 20-6 decision. They followed that by defeating Palomar College, 18-9 to record a split on the day. The Falcons will travel to Mt. San Antonio College on Wednesday for a 4:15 p.m. South Coast Conference match.
 
Cerritos vs. West Valley: It was a tightly contested game from the outset (26 exclusions), with the Falcons getting on the board first on a Dominic Hernandez (Schurr HS) goal. Trailing 4-3 heading into the second quarter, West Valley had a string of three goals in a row and went into halftime with an 8-5 advantage. However, it was a seven-goal third period by the Vikings that put them comfortably in front, 15-5 with eight minutes remaining. West Valley also scored nine of their goals with a man advantage. Hernandez accounted for three of the team's goals, while he assisted on two others and drew four exclusions. Sophomore Silvestre Chavez (Downey HS) also drew four exclusions with his work in front of the goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Rene Borja (Schurr HS) turned away 10 shots, including several outstanding saves in the first half.

Cerritos vs. Palomar: In the win over the Comets, the Falcons received goals from nine different players. After a quick first period where four players scored goals, including sophomore Abimael Anorve (Mira Costa HS), who had two, Cerritos opened up their offense with seven second quarter goals. They outscored Palomar, 7-4 in the quarter with six players contributing to the scoring. After finishing the quarter by accounting for the final three goals, they opened the second half with goals from Allan Jimenez (Schurr HS) and Sebastian Rico (Montebello HS) to increase their lead to 14-5. By the end of the game, the trio of Hernandez, Anorve and Jimenez all had three goals, with Hernandez also assisting on four other goals and registered three steals. Freshman Anthony Alonso (Warren HS) got the start in goal and recorded a complete game win with 11 saves.
