M. Cross Country: Falcons dominate race and finish first overall

Although they held out three of their top runners - including sophomore Munir Kahssay (Western HS) - that didn't slow down the Cerritos College men's cross country team. The Falcons dominated the 4-mile course at the Mt. San Antonio Invitational, which included runners coming in fourth, fifth and sixth place overall, to defeat all of their competition. With 49 team points, the closest competition to Cerritos, ranked #2 in the state, was Hartnell College, who finished in second place with 98 team points. The cumulative time of 1:46.44 by the top five runners set a new course record, and coupled with the women's first place time of 1:34.50, the Falcons set a new course combined record time of 3:21.34 and earned the Sweepstakes Award. The teams will take a week off before they run in the South Coast Conference Championships, which will take place on October 26 at be hosted by Los Angeles Trade-Tech College.

Freshman Jonathan Bazinet (California HS) took the lead with the absence of Kahssay and was the fourth place finisher with a time of 21:07, with teammate Elvis Salinas (Norwalk HS) virtually crossing the finish line at the same time to earn fifth place. Just five seconds behind in 21:12 was sophomore Brandon Taylor (Mayfair HS), who placed sixth over of the 207 runners.

Also conquering the very hilly course, that included two switchbacks, was freshman DeShaunte Lewis (Long Beach Poly HS), who was clocked in 21:34 to come in 12th place overall, with freshman Oscar Contreras (Huntington Park HS) taking 22nd place in a time of 21:44 to comprise the team's top five runners.

A total of 20 runners ran the course for Cerritos, with several others doing very well. Sophomore Joe Magana (Cantwell HS) was able to cross the finish line in 22:07, which put him in 36th place, with freshmen David Pleitez (Lakewood HS; 46th place; 22:18), Mustafa Kahssay (Western HS; 48th place; 22:19) and Steven Hernandez (Kennedy HS; 51st place; 22:21) also turning in strong times.
