W. Basketball: Late scoring lifts Falcons to win over LB City

Trailing 54-53 with 4:01 left in the fourth quarter, the Cerritos College women's basketball team outscored host Long Beach City College, 9-3 the rest of the way for a 62-57 South Coast Conference South Division win on Wednesday night. The Falcons (12-7, 2-0), who have won three in a row and five of their last six, will host El Camino College at 7:00 p.m. on Friday in another divisional game. Fans are not allowed at this time.

Both teams missed their next three shots after the Vikings (12-6, 1-1) took the lead. It was a basket by sophomore Precious Yerena (Downey HS) with 2:20 on the clock that put the Falcons back in front, but was short-lived. Although Long Beach City regained the lead at 56-55, sophomore Therese Zekajj (Legacy HS) netted a pair of free throws on the team's next possession with 1:46 left in the clock. 

Long Beach City's Clarissa Rodriguez missed a three-pointer with freshman Ilani Avila (Downey HS) pulling down the rebound. She drive the length of the court and dished of a pass to freshman Brianna Flores (Norwalk HS), who converted the bucket giving the Falcons a 59-56 advantage with just 71 ticks on the clock remaining. In the final seconds, Yerena converted a free throw, while Avila hit both of her attempts to lock down the win.

Avila led the team with 14 points, while adding six rebounds and four assists, with freshman Izabella Apodaca (La Serna HS) accounting for 12 points and five caroms. The bench received nine points from freshman Ashley Miller (Paramount HS), while Yerena posted nine points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals in the win. Flores, who had her difficulties from the field, made up for it with eight rebounds, while Zekajj and freshman Cynthia Estrada (John Glenn HS) combined for 12 points and 11 rebounds.
