Although they won only five of the 10 weight classifications, the Cerritos College wrestling team picked up bonus points for their large margin of victories against East Los Angeles College on Wednesday. The Falcons defeated the host Huskies, 22-15 in a Southwest Conference match to improve their season record to 8-3, while they are now 1-1 in conference action. The team will now host their first match of the season when Palomar College comes in for a 7:00 p.m. meeting next Wednesday.

Cerritos lost the first two matches on the night before sophomore Greg Barrera (Northwest, TX HS) earned four team points with his 13-2 win at 141 pounds. The was followed by a pin for freshman Eric Ambriz (Temescal Canyon HS) at 149 pounds. He jumped out quickly with a takedown and a pair of near-falls before recording his six-point win.

A pair of losses put the Falcons down in the team score, 12-10, but an 8-7 win for sophomore Timothy Garnica (North Torrance HS) at 174 pounds put the team in the lead for the remainder of the night. Garnica recorded a late two-point near fall to come away with a win. That win was followed by a convincing 9-1 win for freshman Maxwell Kumashiro (Los Alamitos HS) at 184 pounds and a 16-1 win for freshman 197-pound Jeremiah Gerl (Calvary Chapel HS) to give Cerritos a comfortable 10-point lead with one match remaining. Kumashiro broke out to a 5-0 lead in the first period and held that advantage throughout the final two periods. Gerl led only 2-0 after the first three minutes, but a pair of three-point near falls allowed him to pull away.
