Cerritos win third straight SoCal Team Dual title

For the third season in a row, the Cerritos College wrestling team captured the Southern California Team Dual Championship. The Falcons, who will be taking on Fresno City College for the third year in a row on November 18 in the Central Valley, won the state title in 2016 in Fresno and lost in the finals last year at home. They opened the day with a win over a mixed group of wrestlers from other schools, and followed that with a 28-19 win over Bakersfield College. Cerritos earned the title with a 37-7 win over host Palomar College in the finals, which marked their second win in three days over the Comets. The team will resume Southwest Conference action on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. when they travel to Santa Ana College.

Cerritos vs. Bakersfield: After dispatching a team of wrestlers from other schools, the Falcons opened up a 28-3 lead over the Renegades on their way to a victory. The lead was built on the strength of two wins by pin, as well as a forfeit win at 165 pounds. Sophomore Joshua Brown (Esperanza HS) recorded a pin at 141 pounds and was leading 17-4 at the time the match ended, while sophomore Zack Gonzalez (Lakewood HS) needed less than a minute to pin his opponent at 174 pounds. Getting the team off to a quick start was freshman Joshua Mendoza (Warren HS), who registered a 7-6 win at 125 pounds, which included four points coming on escapes, including one late in the third period. At 133 pounds, freshman Andres Gonzalez (Capistrano Valley HS)  posted a 5-0 shutout for a 6-0 team score lead. Also pitching a shutout was freshman Larry Rodriguez (Santa Ana Calvary Chapel HS), an 8-0 winner at 157 pounds.

Cerritos vs. Palomar: Meeting up for the second time in three days, the Falcons didn't need a last-second escape point to secure the win over the Comets. With the score 4-3 after the first two matches, Cerritos started to pull away and posted four pinfall wins in the victory. Sophomore Kennith Kirk (Lake Elsinore HS) recorded a second period pin at 165 pounds, with Gonzalez once again needing less than one period to pin his opponent, and held a 9-3 lead at the time the match ended. Freshman Jarrod Nunez (Mayfair HS) moved down to 197 pounds and posted a first period pin, with freshman 285-pound Randy Gonzalez (Lakewood HS) ending the night with a pin in the second period over Oscar Solano. It was Gonzalez who recorded a last-second escape point over Solano on Wednesday night that secured the win against the Comets. Brown (8-3), Rodriguez (13-2) and sophomore Nick Camacho (Paramount HS), who earned a 7-4 decision at 133 pounds, also won for Cerritos.
