Off to their best start since the 2012 season, the Cerritos College women's water polo team won their first two games at the Cuesta Tournament on Friday. The Falcons (3-0) opened the day with a 13-0 shutout over West Valley College and followed that with a 15-4 victory over the host Cougars. The team will continue the tournament on Saturday with an 8:35 a.m. game against Diablo Valley College before closing out with a 12:55 p.m. contest against Santa Barbara City College.

Cerritos vs. West Valley: Posting their first shutout since the 2012 season, the Falcons played a virtually flawless game. With six different players scoring goals and the team opening a 5-0 advantage after the first period, they continued to play well as the game progressed. Both sophomore Mikaela Padilla (Schurr HS) and freshman Isabella Sierra (California HS) each scored twice in that fast first quarter start, while Padilla went on to lead the team with four goals. Sophomore Vanessa Hinojosa (Bell Gardens HS) finished with three goals, including the team's two lone tallies in the fourth quarter, while freshman Elisa Prohroff (Schurr HS) added two goals and three steals. Cerritos had just three turnovers and recorded 24 steals, with the duo of Sierra and Padilla leading the team with five each. In goal, freshmen Ivanna Tostado (Troy HS) and Dulce Medina (Paramount HS) shared the shutout, with Tostado making the lone four saves in the game.

Cerritos vs. Cuesta: Facing a team that is usually very competitive, the Falcons broke a 2-2 tie after the first period with five unanswered goals in the second quarter to take a 7-2 lead into halftime. They continued their strong play on both ends of the pool and posted a six-goal fourth quarter against the Cougars. Sierra led the team with four goals, as she scored in each quarter, while five other players added a pair of goals in the win. Defensively, sophomore Channon Owens (Kennedy HS) and Hinojosa combined for nine of the team's 18 steals, with Sierra finishing with three and four others with two. Tostado turned away four shots in her time in goal, while Medina made three stops.
