On the first day of the San Diego Mesa Tournament, the Cerritos College women's water polo team opened the day with a win and then suffered a loss. They will play two more games on Saturday. The Falcons (10-4) opened with a 15-5 victory over San Diego Miramar College and then came up short in a 13-9 decision against San Joaquin Delta College.

Cerritos vs. San Diego Miramar: It was a close 6-4 Falcon lead in the third quarter until a late surge carried over into the fourth quarter when the team outscored the Jets, 5-0 to pull away for the win. Sophomore Mikaela Padilla (Schurr HS) gave the team a 7-4 lead with 4:24 left in the third and after a defensive stance, freshman Isabella Sierra (California HS) scored for an 8-4 advantage. Padilla and Sierra each scored again before the end of the third, with five different players scoring in the fourth quarter. Padilla led the team with four goals, with sophomore Vanessa Hinojosa (Bell Gardens HS) adding three goals and three steals. Sierra posted her two goals, as did sophomore Channon Owens (Kennedy HS), who also led the team with six steals. The goalkeeping pairing of freshmen Ivanna Tostado (Troy HS) and Dulce Medina (Paramount HS) continued to work well, as they combined for eight saves.

Cerritos vs. San Joaquin Delta: A slow first quarter got the Falcons behind 6-2 and they were never able to gain any ground on the Mustangs. An early third quarter goal by freshman Elisa Prohroff (Schurr HS) got the team to within 8-6, but San Joaquin Delta responded with two goals for a 10-6 lead. It was 10-7 after a Padilla goal with 2:37 left in the third quarter, but once again the Mustangs came back with a pair of goals. Padilla led the team with four goals, while sophomore Jenny Parra (Schurr HS) scored the team's first two goals in the match. Owens had five more steals, with Tostado and Medina checking in with a combined six saves.
