W. Cross Country: First meet nets seventh place finish

In their first event of the season, the Cerritos College women's cross country team finished in seventh place on Saturday at the Mark Covert Open. The race, which took place at Carbon Canyon Park in Brea, consisted of 11 teams, with five of them being community colleges. The Falcons were the third community college in point total with 197. They will run in the Fresno Invitational next weekend.

Leading the way for the Falcons was sophomore Marylu Pulido (Whittier HS), who placed 18th overall out of the 120 runners with a time of 19:10.40 over the 5K course. It was also the fastest time among community college runners on the day. She was joined by sophomore Maria Orosco (Katella HS), who finished 36th overall when she crossed the finish line in 19:36.97.

Almost a minute later, sophomore Stephanie Perea (Downey HS) recorded a time of 20:31.25 to come in 62nd place, with freshman Adriana Velasco (Downey HS) posting a clocking of 20:46.67, which put her in 68th place. Earning the fifth in the lineup on the day was sophomore Elsa Vazquez Vallin (Warren HS), who ran the course in 21:18.34 to come in 78th place and round out the team scoring.

Also running for the Falcons were freshman Alexis Garfias (Schurr HS; 21:29.71; 83rd place); sophomore Neiva Cuevas (Western HS; 21:56.28; 87th place); freshman Kathia Munoz (Paramount HS; 23:14.63; 100th place) and freshman Jaida Bailey (Vista del Lago HS; 26:40.26; 120th place).
