Thanks to some outstanding times, the Cerritos College women's cross country team came in fourth place at the SoCal Championships on Friday. The Falcons, who won the South Coast Conference title the week before, finished with 138 team points and were barely edged out of third place, as San Diego Mesa College registered 131 points. The team will now get two weeks to prepare for the CCCAA State Championships, which will take place on November 21 at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Competing at Mission Bay Park in San Diego, Cerritos had their top two runners finish in the top 10, as they ran sub-20:00 5K times. The overall winning time of 17:01.91 was turned in by Aminat Olowora of Southwestern College, who beat her closest competition by almost two minutes.

The Falcon women's team placed fourth Sophomores Maria Orosco (Katella HS) and Marylu Pulido (Whittier HS) finished eighth and ninth places, respectively, out of 186 total competitors. Orosco posted a time of 19:24.74 and was the first person to finish after the lead pack recorded the top seven times. As for Pulido, her clocking of 19:35.46 allowed her to edge past another group of six runners for her ninth place finish.

Also running in tight packs of runners were sophomores Stephanie Perea (Downey HS) and Adriana Velasco (Downey HS). Perea finished in a time of 20:13.42 to pick up a 36th place finish, with Velasco pulling away from the next pack for her 40th place time of 20:22.08. The last Falcon runner to round out the team scoring was freshman Alexis Garfias (Schurr HS), whose time of 20:39.46 earned her a 55th place finish. Just three places back, sophomore Elsa Vazquez Vallin (Warren HS) earned 58th place overall with her finish of 20:43.51. The final runner for Cerritos was sophomore Neiva Cuevas (Western HS), who recorded a 112th place time of 21:50.21.
