W. Cross Country: Team tames second place at huge meet

Running the same course the CCCAA State Championships will be held, the Cerritos College women's cross country team turned in a stellar performance on Friday. The Falcons came in second place out of 16 teams, as they compiled 70 team points. They trailed only Glendale College, who won the meet with 60 team points. There were seven teams from Southern California, including two others from the South Coast Conference. Next weekend, the team will travel to San Diego for the Southern California Preview Meet.

The Falcons took second place Leading the way for Cerritos in the 5K race was sophomore Marylu Pulido (Whittier HS), who finished the course in 19:06.9, while was just ahead of two other runners and placed her fourth overall. The winning time of 18:22.9 was posted by Jenica Dodge of American River College. Not far behind Pulido was a pair of sophomores. Elsa Vazquez Vallin (Warren HS) and Maria Orosco (Katella HS) placed 12th and 13th overall, with respective times of 19:29.8 and 19:32.6.

The last two runners to compile the overall team score were freshman Adriana Velasco (Downey HS) and sophomore Stephanie Perea (Downey HS), who were less than two seconds apart. Velasco finished 22nd overall in 20:03.5, while Perea crossed the finish line in 20:05.0. The Falcons had six other runners complete the course.

Competing in the day included Alexis Garfias (Schurr HS; 20:42.0; 35th place), Neiva Cuevas (Western HS; 21:47.3; 71st place), Kathia Munoz (Paramount HS; 22:14.5; 83rd place); Brianna Gill (La Serna HS; 22:35.4; 97th place), Malissa Salazar (Paramount HS; 24:55.9) and Jaida Bailey (Vista del Lago HS; 26:00.8).
