With over 100 scouts in attendance at Kincaid Field on Sunday, a trio of Cerritos College baseball players performed well at the Southern California Fall Sophomore Baseball Showcase. The showcase is designed to give four-year college scouts a chance to get an early look at the incoming sophomore players that will be competing in community college baseball for the 2014 season. The trio of pitcher Jared Robinson (Bishop Amat HS), third baseman Hayden Stevens (Katella HS) and outfielder Johnny Martinez (Katella HS) were a part of the first of two showcases that were presented on the day.

Robinson, who was a 2nd Team All-South Coast Conference selection as a utility player, was the fourth pitcher from one of the teams to take the mound. The format of the showcase is that each pitcher faces four batters, while a pre-determined batting order allows for two at-bats for position players, while they are entitled to multiple innings in the field. In his appearance on the mound, Robinson struck out Ryan Welker of Allan Hancock College and Oliver Jackson of Fullerton College and did not allow the ball to be hit out of the infield.

As for Stevens, he collected a single off Zack Wilkins of Palomar College in his first at-bat and then laced a single off Ryan Paramo of College of the Canyons. He also handled one ground ball flawlessly while playing third base. Martinez had one of the most exciting plays of the day when he legged out an RBI triple in his first at-bat against Julien Garcia of College of the Canyons and then flied out against David Espendola of Rio Hondo College in his other plate appearance. Both Stevens and Martinez were also 2nd Team All-SCC picks as freshmen.
