On Saturday at Mt. San Jacinto College, the Cerritos College baseball team pounded out 17 hits, with seven of them going for extra bases in a 14-3 win. The Falcons (8-2) 10-game start matches their best since the 2008 season, which was also the last time the team won 30 games in a season. They will host Palomar at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday in a non-conference game.

Cerritos opened an 11-0 lead against the Eagles (1-10) through the first 6 1/2 innings of play. Just as the offense was clicking, so was sophomore starting pitcher Gilbert Romero (Alhambra HS), who allowed two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts to improve to 3-0 on the year. He allowed just four hits through the first six innings, with Mt. San Jacinto scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh inning before coming out in favor of sophomore Jakob Gonzalez (La Mirada HS/San Jose State University).

At the plate, the Falcons posted single runs in the first and second innings before breaking the game open with a five-run fourth inning. Freshman outfielder Gabriel Gonzalez (Santa Fe HS) started the game with a bunt single and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt. A throwing error on a ground ball by sophomore outfielder Rollie Nichols (Serra HS) brought Gonzalez home with the first run of the game. With one out in the top of the second inning, freshman first baseman Michael Gonzalez (St. Bernard HS) hit his first home run of the season for a 2-0 advantage.

With sophomore second baseman Jesus Mercado (St. John Bosco HS) and sophomore shortstop Ramon Bramasco (Cathedral HS) on base in the fourth inning, freshman designated hitter Eric Winchester (Diamond Bar HS) doubled in both for his first collegiate hit. The inning continued with sophomore outfielder Nick Penzetta (Kamehameha, HI HS) slapping a single, with Gabriel Gonzalez driving in Winchester with a single. Penzetta then scored on a wild pitch, while Gabriel Gonzalez reached home on a passed ball to end the scoring in the inning.

Sophomore third baseman Jorge Rodriguez (Bellflower HS) added a two-run single in the fifth inning, while Mercado and Bramasco drove in runs in the ninth inning with consecutive doubles. On the day, the Falcons recorded six doubles and the home run by Michael Gonzalez.

Gabriel Gonzalez led a 17-hit attack with a 4-for-6 day with three runs scored a two RBI, with Bramasco and Michael Gonzalez each collecting three hits. Seven of the nine starters recorded at least one hit.
