Although several of their fielding errors hurt them on the day, the Cerritos College baseball team took full advantage of six Fullerton College errors in an 11-7 win on Friday. The Falcons (7-2) kept several innings alive with a good eye at the plate and some Hornet miscues, as the game saw several big innings recorded.
After Cerritos opened a 4-0 lead through the first three innings, Fullerton (6-5) pushed six runs across the plate in the top of the fourth inning after a two-out error opened the door. Sophomore pitcher Noah Andrunas (Gahr HS/UC Riverside) was able to withstand that inning and went on to retire 10 of the final 12 batters he faced. Andrunas (4-0), who is tied for the state lead in wins, opened the game by striking out the first four batters and, although he allowed six runs, all were unearned. He also struck out nine and did not allow a walk.
Finding themselves trailing, 6-4 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Falcons responded with four runs in the stanza. Sophomore outfielder Diego Orozco (Long Beach Wilson HS) led off with a base hit, followed by a walk to freshman designated hitter Brody Cuellar (Bishop Montgomery HS). Freshman first baseman Wyatt Ormonde (Long Beach Millikan HS), who singled home a pair of runs in the second inning, hit a ground ball to third base, where Eric Polanco threw the ball wild, which allowed both runners to score. Ormonde then came home on an infield out by sophomore second baseman Dylan Immel (El Segundo HS). After freshman third baseman Mateo Heredia (El Segundo HS) reached on an infield hit, he came around to score on a fielding error by first baseman Trevor Schmidt.
A pair of walks to start the fifth inning, with freshman outfielder Owen Martin (Narbonne HS) scoring on a single by Ormonde. Cerritos who saw their leadoff batter reach base in seven of the eight innings, added a run on a leadoff home run by Ormonde in the seventh inning and closed out the scoring in the eighth inning when sophomore outfielder Evan Saito (Torrance HS) doubled home freshman catcher Daniel Cuadras (Warren HS/Golden West College), who led off with a double.
Ormonde finished the game 4-for-5 at the plate with four RBI and after he was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning, came out of the game. Orozco drew three walks and scored three times, while Martin (2-for-4, walk, two runs, RBI) and Cuadra (2-for-4, HBP) also reached base three times.
