From 1998-99, Bobby Magallanes was one of the best shortstops to ever put on a Cerritos College baseball uniform. In helping lead the Falcons to the 1989 state championship, Magallanes batted .364 with 63 hits, 13 doubles, eight home runs, 39 RBI, along with 33 walks and was named 1st Team All-American and 1st Team All-South Coast Conference. He parlayed that into a 5th Round draft selection by the Seattle Mariners.
Magallanes, who spent the last four seasons as the Assistant Hitting Coach for the Atlanta Braves, was just signed to take on the same role with the Mariners. Magallanes won a World Series with the Braves in his first season.
He spent 1990-92 as a member of the Mariners minor league system before playing a season in the independent league. He moved on to the Mexican League, where he played until 2001.
Magallanes (pictured, left in 1989) became a coach in the Las Angeles Angels' organization in 2002 and was promoted to manager of the Cedar Rapids Kernals for the 2004 season. He was promoted to manage the Arkansas Travelers in 2007 and won the Texas League championship in 2008. After the 2019 season, he moved on to manage the Birmingham Barons from 2011-12 and then went to Central American to coach the Estrellas Orientales in the Dominican Winter League in 2013-14. In 2015, he served as the hitting coach for the Lynchburg Hillcats in 2015 and the Arizone League Indians from 2016-17. In 2018, he coached the Columbix Clippers and the Gwinnett Stripers in 2019 before his appointment with the Braves.
