After spotting visiting Pasadena City College two runs in the top of the first inning, the Cerritos College baseball team scored 12 of the game's final 13 runs to post a 12-3 victory. The win by the Falcons (15-2, 4-0) was their ninth in a row, and they will face the Lancers (10-5, 5-2) in the second game of their series being moved to Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Field.
Freshman starting pitcher Nolan Patterson (Long Beach Millikan HS) was touched up for a pair of triples and a single to the first three batters he faced on the day. After issuing a walk, he struck out Evan Nahra and then got Devin Munoz into an inning-ending double play. After that inning, Patterson (3-1) retired 11 of the next 13 batters he faced and ended up tossing seven innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and struck out a pair.
Although they were able to get the first two batters on base in each of the first three innings, the Falcons could not get on the board. They took the lead in the fifth inning, thanks in part to an error that allowed a run to score. Sophomore outfielder Diego Orozco (Long Beach Wilson HS), who leads the state with 30 walks, drew his second of the day to open the fifth inning. Sophomore outfielder Evan Saito (Torrance HS) followed with a single before freshman designated hitter Brody Cuellar (Bishop Montgomery HS) loaded the bases after he was hit by a pitch. Freshman first baseman Wyatt Ormonde (Long Beach Millikan HS) then singled to Lancers second baseman Rocco Regan, who tried to get Ormonde at the bag. However, his throw was wild, which not only drove in Orozco, but allowed Saito to score.
Sophmore second baseman Dylan Immel (El Segundo HS) followed with an RBI single, which chased PCC starting pitcher Hugo Tafoya (2-1). Freshman third baseman Mateo Heredia (El Segundo HS) drove home the final run of the four-run stanza with a sacrifice fly.
The Falcons were just getting started, as they scored six more times in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach.
With one out, Orozco drew a walk, while Saito was hit by a pitch. Cuellar followed by driving a shot to the left field wall for a double, which plated both runners. Ormonde, who is fourth in the state with 31 RBI traded places with Cuellar when he doubled. Immel and Heredia each drew walks to load the bases for freshman shortstop Fabian Ochoa (Warren HS), who drove in two runs with a single. Heredia scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.
Freshman outfielder Owen Martin (Narbonne HS), who hit two deep balls earlier in the game that were held up by the wind, launched a two-out solo home run in the eighth inning to close out the scoring.
Immel went 3-for-5 with a pair of walks and an RBI, while Martin (walk, RBI), Cuellar (two RBI, two runs) and Ormonde (two RBI, two runs) all had a pair of hits for Cerritos on the day.
