A lot of changes were made at the conclusion of the 2017 Cerritos College football season. Frank Mazzotta, who had served as the head coach for 40 years, retired and a slew of assistant coaches didn't return. But new head coach Dean Grosfeld, who had been on Mazzotta's staff for 24 years, has a new approach to the 2018 season, which includes new assistant coaches and the leadership of many players.

Grosfeld named eight sophomores to be team captains, with seven of the eight being third-year sophomores. All eight played key roles in the team's 56-21 win in their season-opener against East Los Angeles College. All of the players were selected by the coaching staff and Grosfeld stated that all of shown tremendous maturity and work ethic.

"These individuals have done well in the classroom and are players of character and selflessness," stated Grosfeld. "These players were picked by the coaching staff to lead our Falcons into and through the 2018 season. It's nice when your best players are players of high character."
