Since the start of South Coast Conference South Division play last week, the Cerritos College men's basketball team has eclipsed the 90-point mark in all three of their wins. The Falcons (16-5, 3-0) put 90 points on the board in their 90-73 win over visiting Compton College at The Avairy on Wednesday night. The will look to keep that streak going when they travel to Los Angeles Southwest College for a 5:00 p.m. start on Friday.
Combining an outside shooting threat with their fast break, Cerritos connected on eight three-pointers, while using their transition offense to pull away from the Tartars. Sophomore Cody Wilkes (La Mirada HS), who accounted for four of the team's buckets from the outside, led the team with 18 points, with freshman Chance Hunter (Inglewood HS) scoring most of his 17 points on the inside, while pulling down 14 rebounds.
Compton also came out launching long distance shots and scored four of their first five baskets from three-point range. The Falcons opened a 32-22 lead with 1:57 left in the first half, but the Tartars made a late run, including a long three-pointer by Aaron Taylor at the buzzer to make it a 34-30 Cerritos lead at intermission.
It was 34-33 early in the second half untul Wilkes drained a three-pointer from the corner, which was followed by a Christian Alvis-Labadie (Whittier Christian HS) three-pointer. In the three minutes before the Tartars scored after drawing to within a point, the Falcons scored 11 straight points. Sophomore Tawon Elston (Roosevelt HS) scored five quick points, including a three-pointer, which opened the lead up to 54-38 with 13:32 left in the game.
Freshman center Daylen Bams (Villa Park HS) followed with a trio of jumpers to make it a 22-point (60-38) lead, which was followed by an Elston layup after a steal by Bams. The Falcons then cruised the rest of the way for their 17-point victory.
Elston scored 14 points and dished out five assists off the bench, while Bams posted nine points with six rebounds in a reserve role. Alvis-Labadie contributed eight points, with sophomore Dezmon Murphy (La Mirada HS) accounting for six points and six caroms.
