Using a versatile offensive attack every game, the Cerritos College men's basketball team had five of their players named 1st Team All-South Coast Conference South Division. The Falcons (22-6), who won their second straight divisional title in a row, and third in four years, will open the postseason seeded #5 and will host West Los Angeles College at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
Leading the way among those who earned all-conference honors was freshman Chance Hunter (Inglewood HS), along with sophomores Dezmon Murphy (La Mirada HS), Jamal Heckard (Carson HS/El Camino College) and Cody Wilkes (La Mirada HS), along with freshman Tawon Elston (Roosevelt HS).
Hunter leads the team with a 14.0 scoring average and 7.5 rebounds, has been successful on 52% of his field goals. He's scored over 20 points in four games this season and posted double-digit scoring in 23 games. Hunter also posted five double-doubles, which included a season-high 14 rebounds against Compton College. Murphy, who accounts for 9.6 points and 5.8 rebounds a game, connects on 54.5% of his field goals. He posted a season-high 20 points and 10 rebounds against Allan Hancock College, while he produced 12 double-digit scoring games.
The first player in more than two decades to record a triple-double, Heckard averages 7.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and a team-high 4.1 assists a game. His triple-double came against Rio Hondo College, where he finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds and 13 assists. Additionally, Heckard recorded his two highest scoring games of the season in the final two contests, which included 20 points against Los Angeles Southwest College. Wilkes is third on the team with an 11.6 scoring average and adds 3.0 rebounds a game, while leading the team with 58 three-pointers made. He turned in a 22-point game against College of the Canyons, which included five three-pointers, and has scored in double-figures 18 times on the year. The most productive player coming off the bench, Elston averages 11.8 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. He scored a season-high 23 points against Long Beach City College and eclipsed the 20-point mark three times on the year.
