In their first meet of the season, the Cerritos College men's swimming team took part in the South Coast Conference Pentathlon on Friday at East Los Angeles College. The Falcons, who will take a week off, will compete in the Golden West Sprint Medley in two weeks.
The pentathlon is set up as five events with the combined times accounting for individual standings. Although Cerritos swam as many as 10 in an individual event, only three competed in all five of them. The top finisher for the Falcons was Isiah Wright, who placed 27th in the pentathlon standings with a combined time of 7:07.85.
The best event for any Cerritos swimmer was the 100-yard breaststroke, as Aiden Parra posted a 23rd place time of 1:11.76 and was part of a group of five swimmers that all finished within a second of each other. The tandem of Ruben Martinez (1:16.00) and Nick Chieng (1:16.01) finished in 37th and 38th places, respectively.
Always the most competitive event of the pentathlon saw Chieng come in 19th place out of 100 entries in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.365, while Wright completed the race in 56.12, which put him in 40th place.
In the 100-yard butterfly, Johan Gaytan finished in 27th place with a time of 1:04.17, with teammate Max Lucero turning in a 35th place time of 1:05.34. In the 200-yard IM, Gaytan touched up in 2:24.11, which put him in 33rd place, with Chieng right behind in 35th place with a clocking of 2:25.91.
Ben Neppl led the Falcons in the 100-yard backstroke with a 29th place time of 1:06.79 and actually tied with Gaytan for that placing, while Chieng posted a 34th place time of 1:06.97.
The day opened with the 200-yard medley relay, with the foursome of Gaytan, Parra, Neppl and Chieng finishing in ninth place with a clocking of 1:57.08.
