Over the weekend, the Cerritos College men's water polo team won three of their four games at the San Diego Mesa Tournament. The Falcons (8-5) opened the first day with wins over both Fullerton College (16-9) and Southwestern College (21-10), followed by a loss to Citrus College (16-9) and ended with a 17-5 victory over Southwestern College on Saturday. The team will resume South Coast Conference play with a 4:30 p.m. game against visiting Chaffey College.
Cerritos vs. Fullerton: After allowing the first goal of the game, the Falcons scored the next eight goals and held a 10-2 advantage at halftime. Sophomore Salvador Orozco (Montebello HS) accounted for three of those goals in the first two quarters, with freshman Raul Muniz (Colbach HS, Mexico) posting assists on three of the team's goals. Cerritos was never threatened in the game, and ended up receiving five goals from Orozco, with sophomore Mark Arroyo (Schurr HS) adding three goals and three assists. Eight players would end up scoring at least one goal, while Muniz finished with five assists and sophomore goalkeeper Jason Curiel (El Rancho HS) making nine saves.
Cerritos vs. Southwestern: A season-high seven first quarter goals enabled the Falcons to take an early lead against the Jaguars, with Muniz scoring three times in the first eight minutes. Defense also aided the team, as they posted 16 steals, with Curiel turning in 10 saves in net. Balanced offense once again guided Cerritos to their win, as eight players scored for the second game in a row. Muniz finished with a season-high six goals and added four assists, with the duo of Orozco and Arroyo each adding four goals, while Arroyo and sophomore Julian Casillas (Harvard-Westlake HS/University of La Verne) both recorded four assists. Freshman Jake Evans (Long Beach Wilson HS) led the defense with five steals.
Cerritos vs. Citrus: The Falcons came out flat against the Owls, who took a 6-0 first quarter lead and led 10-1 at halftime. Cerritos outscored Citrus, 10-6 in the second half, but the damage was done. Orozco led the team with four goals (10 shots), with Arroyo and Muniz posting three goals and two goals, respectively. Freshman Arturo Ortuno (Universidad La Salle, Mexico) led the team with four steals, with Curiel recording five saves.
Cerritos vs. San Diego Miramar: The tournament ended for the Falcons with a strong win over the Jets, as they held a commanding 6-1 lead after the first period and increased that to 9-1 in the second period. Of the first nine goals scored, eight Falcons found the back of the net, with 10 players scoring in the match. Evans (three goals, three assists, three steals) led the balanced attack, with Muniz, Dylan Sun (Cerritos HS), Dylan Degeeter (Granada Hills Kennedy HS), Zach Estrada (St. John Bosco HS) and Justin Rudisill (La Quinta HS) all scoring twice. Estrada also assisted on five goals and made four steals on defense.
