The Cerritos College men's cross country team took part in their first meet of the season, as they traveled to Cal Baptist University for the Lancer Invitational on Friday. The Falcons took sixth place out of as many schools with 142 team points and were the only community college entered in the meet. They will travel to Woodward Park, location of the state championship meet, next Saturday for the Fresno Invitational.
Competing in the 6,000-meter race, Cerritos was led by sophomore Faustino Diaz (Warren HS), who came in 18th place out of 79 entries with a time of 19:56. He held off six runners who were less than 10 seconds behind him when they crossed the finish line. Sophomore Carlos Mendoza (Highland HS) was the next Falcon to finish, as he was clocked in 20:24 for 29th place overall and was followed closely by freshman teammate Abraxaz Sanchez (Schurr HS) with his 32nd place time of 20:31.
The fourth member of the team to finish the course was freshman Cristhian Macias (Gardena HS), as he was clocked in 20:49, good for 40th place on the day There was a dropoff from that point on with the team, as sophomore Anthony Lopez (Downey HS) rounded out the team scoring with a 51st place finish in a time of 21:24. He was followed by freshman Jhamani Long (Gahr HS), who posted a 53rd place time of 21:37. A total of 11 more Cerritos runners competed in the event.
