Limited to no runs on just three hits through the first four innings, the Cerritos College offense came to life in the fifth inning and scored 10 times to record a 10-0, 5-inning win over visiting Compton College on Tuesday. The Falcons (22-6, 13-3), winners of five in a row, will complete their suspended game from March 11 against Pasadena City College on Thursday before playing their regularly scheduled games against the Lancers. Cerritos was leading in the suspended game, 6-2 in the top of the sixth inning, while both games will take place at Citrus College.

Unable to get a ball out of the infield for the first 3 2/3 innings, freshman third baseman Marley Cortez (Gahr HS) singled up the middle in the fourth inning. The offense went into overdrive once the fifth inning started.

Sophomore outfielder Morgan Fontela (Long Beach Millikan HS) got things started in the fifth inning with a double and then came around to score on a single by sophomore catcher Vicky Najera (El Rancho HS), who took second base on the throw to the plate. Najera raced home on a base hit by former Compton College player Briana Zarate (Legacy HS/Compton College), who would play the key role in ending the game via the eight-run mercy rule.

An infield single by sophomore shortstop Ayiana Cardenas (Walnut HS) was followed by the first out of the inning coming on a fielder's choice. A walk to freshman outfielder Carissa Amaya (El Rancho HS) loaded the bases for freshman outfielder Amarie Encarnacion (Norwalk HS), who drove in a run with a walk of her own. A wild pitch brought home another run before a single by Fontela and a walk to Najera loaded the bases once again. Zarate ended the game by launching a 3-0 pitch to center field for her team-leading fifth home run of the season.

Freshman pitcher Tatyana Cortez (La Serna HS) started the game by striking out six batters through the first three innings while scattering two hits and two walks. She picked up her 15th win of the season by retiring the final seven batters she faced and increased her state-leading strikeout total to 167.
