Falcons were seeded #12 for the playoffs

Starting this weekend, the Cerritos College women's basketball team will embark on what is considered their "second season". The Falcons (20-10), who came in second place in the South Coast Conference South Division, were seeded #12 for the playoffs and will travel to #5 Irvine Valley College (21-7) for a 7:00 p.m. game on Friday. It will mark the second season in a row that Cerritos will travel to take on the Lasers in the 2nd Round of the playoffs.

The winner of the game will face the winner of #13-seeded Riverside vs. #4-seeded Long Beach City game next Wednesday.

Cerritos earned the higher seed after posting a 21-point win over division champion Long Beach City College on Friday. The Vikings were seeded #4 for the playoffs. Their season came to an end with a 58-48 loss to Irvine Valley last year, which also marked the final game for long time head coach Karen Welliver.

The Lasers came in second place in the Orange Empire Conference and the teams have faced six common opponents this season. Cerritos has gone 5-3 in those games, while the Lasers were also 5-3.

They are led by Tara Casey, who is averaging 10.8 points, 5.3 rebounds a game and has drained 53 three-pointers on the season. Although she is the only player averaging in double figures, the team is very balanced, with four other players averaging eight points a game. Kasey Smit (9.5 points, 7.4 rebounds), Jordan Coleman (8.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists), Kydell Pearson (8.4 points, 5.2 rebounds) and Morgan Bryant (57.5 FG%, 7.8 points, 6.3 rebounds) have all helped the Lasers to another 20-win season.

As for the Falcons, they have been led by freshman Allyson O'Brien, who is scoring 10.9 points and 3.0 rebounds a game to go with her 32 three-pointers. Kennedi Cooper accounts for 7.9 points and 3.7 rebounds a game, with Miranda Valentin checking in with 7.7 points and 6.2 rebounds a game. Ashley Flores leads the team with 7.2 rebounds a game and scores 7.5 points per game, with Clarissa Hernandez (6.7 points) and Verenice Gomez (6.5 points, 34 three-pointers) all making key contributions.
