W. Basketball: Falcons take third place at tournament

The Cerritos College women's basketball team won two of their three games at the West Hills-Lemoore Tournament to earn third place. The Falcons (10-4) have taken third place in three of their four tournaments and also reached the finals of another. They close out their pre-conference schedule with the Fullerton Tournament and open with Santa Monica College at 4:00 p.m. on December 27. At the West Hills Tournament, the team posted a 77-40 win over Marin College in their opening game, but then suffered a 74-52 loss to Fresno City College in the semifinals. They came back for an 84-60 win against Laney College in the third place game.

Cerritos vs. Marin: The Falcons broke open the game with a 23-4 third quarter, as they turned a 32-23 halftime lead into a convincing 55-27 advantage. The trio of sophomores Verenice Gomez (Whittier HS), Miranda Valentin (Bellflower HS) and Crystal Lomax (Lynwood HS) all scored 12 points, while Valentin also pulled down 11 rebounds. Sophomore Ashley Flores (California HS) finished with nine points and six rebounds, while Lomax and sophomore Kennedi Cooper (Lakewood HS) each added five rebounds. Cerritos shot 46% from the field and limited Marin to 23% shooting from the field.

Cerritos vs. Fresno City: Struggling from the field, the Falcons found themselves down 23-15 after the first quarter and 47-30 at halftime. Cerritos converted just 34% of their shots and were led by Valentin with eight points and five rebounds, while sophomore Clarissa Hernandez (St. Paul HS) and freshman Allyson O'Brien (La Habra HS) each had seven points. Lomax pulled down six rebounds off the bench, but the team was out-rebounded, 49-27.

Cerritos vs. Laney: Gomez was named to the All-Tournament team after she finished with 13 points and hit a trio of three-pointers in the win. O'Brien led the team with 17 points and had five rebounds, with Flores and freshman Teresa Wang (Gabrielino HS) each contributing 11 points. Wang also had three three-pointers off the bench, as the team also received eight points from Cooper and sophomore Sydney Lopez (Whittier Christian HS).
