With help from everyone on the roster, the Cerritos College women's basketball team posted an 83-26 South Coast Conference win at Los Angeles Harbor College on Wednesday night. The Falcons improved to 19-9 overall and 5-1 in the South Division with just two regular season games remaining. The team has received a forfeit win against Los Angeles Southwest College for this Friday, as the Cougars are forced to forfeit the remainder of their season due to an insufficient number of players.
Cerritos currently sits in second place in the division behind rival Long Beach City and close out the regular season hosting the Vikings on February 19. Prior to that, they will travel to El Camino College next Wednesday for a 5:00 p.m. contest.
The big win allowed the reserves to play extended minutes and it resulted in freshman Kaylyn James (Lakewood HS) leading the team with 15 points, with nine of them coming in the second half. In fact, 49 of the team's points came from the bench, as the starters sat the entire fourth quarter.
Interestingly enough, the Seahawks (4-19, 2-5) scored the first four points of the game. But the Falcons went on to score the next 12 points and never looked back. They utilized their team speed and size to record 16 steals and pulled down 64 rebounds on the night.
Before resting the remainder of the game, freshman Allyson O'Brien (La Habra HS) recorded 14 points, while James accrued her points in just 12 minutes of action. All 13 players scored for the Falcons and pulled down at least one rebound. Sophomore Teresa Wang (Gabrielino HS) drained a trio of three-pointers in the second half to finish with nine points, with sophomore Ashley Flores (California HS) pulling down nine rebounds to go with her five points.
Freshman Victoria Mura (Cerritos HS) also hit a three-pointer and concluded with five points and four boards, while sophomore Crystal Lomax (Lynwood HS) pulled down seven rebounds, as did sophomore Sydney Lopez (Whittier Christian HS).
