Wrestling: Cerritos sweeps conference awards

Coming off their Southwest Conference championship, the Cerritos College wrestling team swept the awards, with nine receiving recognition. The Falcons, who also won the CCCAA Team Dual State Championship and Southern California Championship, finished second at the CCCAA State Championships over the weekend.

Leading the awards was freshman 197-pound David Van Weems (Corona Centennial HS), who went undefeated on the year and was named the conference's Wrestler of the Year. Head coach Donny Garriott, who has guided the Falcons to top three finishes in the state over the last three seasons, including the 2014 state championship, was named the conference's Coach of the Year.

Also named 1st Team all-conference were freshman 149-pound Wyatt Gerl (Downey Calvary Chapel HS), freshman 165-pound Kennith Kirk (Elsinore HS), freshman 174-pound Blake Vasquez (Fountain Valley HS), as well as Van Weems. Selected to the 2nd Team included freshman 125-pound Norberto Buenrostro (Citrus Hill HS), sophomore 141-pound Richard Pocock (California HS), sophomore 157-pound Dylan Moreno (Downey HS), freshman 184-pound Bryant Vasquez (Fountain Valley HS) and freshman 285-pound David Zavala (Lakewood HS).

All nine of the wrestlers were place winners at the state championships, with Buenrostro (3rd place), Pocock (4th place), Blake Vasquez (4th place) and Zavala (4th place) also earning All-America honors.
