For the third year in a row, the Cerritos College wrestling team captured the Southern California Championship, after they compiled 205 team points at Cuesta College on Saturday. Palomar College was a distant second place with 171 team points. The Falcons, who had four individual champions, four second place finishers and three that came in third place, will advance all 11 of them to the CCCAA State Championships that will take place next weekend at Victor Valley College.

Cerritos, who took third place at the state championship last year, will be looking for their second title in the last three seasons. They have already won the team dual state championship and are ranked #1 in the state.

Richard Pocock was one of four individual champions Winning individual championships were freshmen 125-pound Norberto Buenrostro (Citrus Hill HS), sophomore 141-pound Richard Pocock (pictured, leftCalifornia HS), sophomore 157-pound Dylan Moreno (Downey HS) and freshman 197-pound David Van Weems (Corona Centennial HS). As for Moreno, he was to square off against sophomore Kevin James (Redondo Union HS) for first place, but they decided to flip a coin to see who would forfeit the match to his teammate and Moreno won the coin flip.

Of the team's 12 entries, 11 of them advanced to the semifinals, with freshman 149-pound Wyatt Gerl (Downey Calvary Chapel HS), freshman 165-pound Blake Vasquez (Fountain Valley HS) and freshman 184-pound Bryant Vasquez  (Fountain Valley HS) joining James with second place finishes. The trio of freshman 165-pound Kennith Kirk (Elsinore HS), freshman 174-pound Isaiah Leyva (San Jacinto HS) and freshman 285-pound David Zavala (Lakewood HS) all placed third.

Buenrostro pinned his first two opponents before defeating Elijah Diaz of Mt. San Antonio College, 10-1 to advance to the championships. In that final match, he held on for a 2-1 win over top-seeded Pedro Sarabia of Bakersfield College. At 141 pounds, the top-seeded Pocock posted a 15-0 technical fall in his first match and then a 5-0 win in the semifinals. He faced Andrew Gomez of Santa Ana College in the finals and earned a 7-2 win.

James and Moreno entered the SoCal Championships seeded first and second, with both receiving byes in the first round. James had a close 2-1 win over Apollo Santos of Mt. SAC in his first match and then earned a 4-2 win over Jessy Diaz of Palomar College to reach the finals. As for Moreno, he opened with a pin over Elijah Hernandes of Santa Ana and then handed West Hills College's Nathan Pimentel a 6-2 defeat to advance to the finals.

Top-seeded Van Weems had a first round bye and then registered consecutive 14-5 decisions, while he defeated #2-seeded Andrew Ramos of Rio Hondo College, 15-7 in the championships.
