In their first tournament of the season, the Cerritos College wrestling team compiled 165 team points and finished in second place at West Hills on Saturday. The Falcons, who had one individual champion, along with two second place finishers, trailed Fresno City College (211.5 team points) and finished ahead of Mt. San Antonio College, who had 157.5 team points. The team will travel to Santa Ana College for another tournament next Saturday.
The team's lone weight champion was 149-pound sophomore Felix Osorio (Santa Fe HS), who was the top seed. After opening with a 13-6 win over Zack Zernick of Moorpark College, he followed with pin over Joseph Insalaco of Sacramento City in 5:43. In his quarterfinal match, Osorio pinned Chase Mirelaz of Modesto College in a time of 3:45, while he earned a 19-7 win over Phillip Arroyo of West Hills, which included a third period four-point near fall that almost resulted in his third straight pin. Facing Billy Looney of Mt. San Antonio in the championship match, he broke a 5-5 tie in the third period with an escape with :50 seconds remaining and held off Looney for the title.
At 141 pounds, unranked freshman Mario De La Torre (Temescal Canyon HS) advanced to the championship match, but suffered a 10-5 loss to West Hills Wayne Joint. In the match, it was 4-4 midway through the second period until Joint recorded a takedown with 1:07 left and added to his lead with a :23 seconds left and added a point for riding time. De La Torre reached the finals with a 14-0 opening round win over Wyatt Carter of Modesto College. That was followed by a first period pin over Jesse Gaytan of the Menlo Wrestling Club. That advanced him to the semifinals, where he posted a 12-2 major decision over #2-seeded Jason Valencia of Mt. San Antonio.
The Falcons had their second runner-up at 184 pounds, as freshman Rafael Guerra (Downey HS) received a bye in the first round. He then pinned Muhammad Sarsour of Skyline College in 1:35, which was followed by a pin over Modesto College's Logan Colbert in 5:40, who was seeded #3. Although he was trailing #7-seeded Jezziel Perez of Moorpark, 3-2 in the second period, Guerra was able to pin him with :57 seconds remaining in the period. That sent him to the finals, where he took a quick 4-0 lead over #7-seeded Luke Meyers of Fresno City. However, Meyers was able to reverse a hold and pinned Guerra with :19 seconds left in the period. The top seed in the weight, sophomore Stone Robledo (Villa Park HS) reached the quarterfinals, but had to settle for sixth place.
Other Falcons were placed on the day included 133-pound Anthony Pereyra (Lakeside HS), who placed third, as did 157-pound Trevor Thompson (Long Beach Millikan HS). At 285 pounds, Kobe Pablo (Cypress HS) took fifth place, with the trio of 125-pound Jameer McCrae (Villa Park HS), 165-pound Mateo Jaramillo (Yorba Linda HS) and 197-pound Justin Sawai (North Torrance HS) all finished in seventh place.
