Highlighted by three wins by pin and a pair of forfeits, the Cerritos College wrestling team opened Southwest Conference action on Wednesday night with a 40-10 victory over visiting Santa Ana College. The Falcons (4-1, 1-0), who are ranked #2 in the state, will host the Southern California Duals this Saturday.
In the win over the Dons, Cerritos received forfeit wins at 133 pounds and 197 pounds, while the three pins came in succession. Leading 9-0 in the team scoring, freshman 141-pound Anthony Pereyra (Lakeside HS) surrendered an early reversal to Brandon Huynh before coming right back with a reversal to tie the score. He continued to work on his positioning and got Huynh on his back and earned the pin in 1:08 to make it a 15-0 lead.
The night started with 125-pound freshman Jameer McCrae (Villa Park HS) opening a 4-1 lead in the first period only to see it turn into a 6-4 deficit heading into the final two minutes. With less than a minute remaining, McCrae recorded an escape point to pull to within 6-5 and then completed a reversal with :36 seconds left to take the lead. He rode Damein Lopez the remainder of the period to post the victory.
At 149 pounds, freshman Mario De La Torre (Temescal Canyon HS) was in control from the beginning and after scoring a takedown a minute into the match, ended up pinning Nicholas Gutierrez with 1:47 expired in the match. It was 1:49 before sophomore Felix Osorio (Santa Fe HS) eventually pinned Zeke Hunter at 157 pounds. A trio of takedowns were offset by a pair of escape points for Hunter until the final takedown led to the pin by Osorio in 1:49.
After the Dons got on the scoreboard with a pair of wins, sophomore 184-pound Stone Robledo (Villa Park HS) turned a close 2-0 lead after the first two periods into a quick 6-2 advantage after a takedown, reversal and point for stalling called against Santa Ana's Sergio Gutierrez and went on to post a 7-2 win. In the final match of the night, freshman 285-pound Kobe Pablo (Cypress HS) was trailing, 1-0 heading into the final period. While on the bottom to start the third period, Pablo recorded a two-point reversal and two-point near-fall. After Ruben Marfin escaped the hold, Pablo got him on his back and put the match out of reach with a takedown and four-point near-fall before going on to post a 12-3 major decision.
