Hosting their South Coast Conference opener on Friday, the Cerritos College women's swimming team split with Long Beach City and Chaffey College. The Falcons earned a 178-65 win over the Panthers, but were defeated, 152-106 by the Vikings. The team will compete in another conference meet next Friday at 10:00 a.m. when they travel to take on host Mt. San Antonio College and Rio Hondo College.

Cerritos won four events on the day, with freshman Mia Carbajal (Schurr HS) having a hand in three of them. She joined sophomores Carolina Medrano (Schurr HS) and Elisabeth Stansell (Los Alamitos HS), along with freshman Amanda Acosta, to win the 200-yard medley in a time of 2:08.09, which was less than a second ahead of second place LBCC (2:08.51).

Carbajal also won the 100-yard breaststroke with a clocking of 1:18.12, which was just ahead of the Vikings Maggie Damon (1:18.66). Acosta was a close third in a time of 1:19.03. Picking up her second individual first place on the day, Carbajal recorded a time of 2:47.28 in the 200-yard breaststroke, with her nemesis Damon on her heels in 2:47.73. Once again, Acosta touched up in third place in a time of 2:53.98.

Medrano won the team's other race, as she easily defeated the field in the 200-yard butterfly with a clocking of 2:44.91, which was 29 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.

Freshman Karina Oliveros (Downey HS) placed second in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 13:14.38, while Medrano was a second place finisher in the 100-yard butterfly (1:09.68). Long Beach's Alajandra Villa edged her out for first place in 1:09.62, which was the closest race of the day.

The 400-yard freestyle relay quartet of Acosta, Oliveros, Medrano and Carbajal finished second with a time of 4:23.89.
