W. Swimming: Pair of wins caps off conference dual meet schedule

Led by a trio of swimmers who won three individual races, and two who had a pair of wins, the Cerritos College women's swimming team closed out their South Coast Conference dual meet schedule on Friday. Swimming at East Los Angeles College, the Falcons (5-2) posted wins over the host Huskies (157-103) and Rio Hondo College (175-47). After taking a week off, the team will compete in the three-day South Coast Conference Championships.

The tandem of sophomore Camila Oliveira (Cerritos HS) and freshman Eleonor Curiel (Downey HS) recorded the most individual points for Cerritos with their three first place finishes, while each of them also swam on a winning relay team. Oliveira posted a first place finish in three of the longer races, as she won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:57.98), 200-yard butterfly (2:35.26) and 200-yard IM in a time of 2:33.35. Sophomore teammate Sydney Romero (Cerritos HS/Azusa Pacific University), who won two events and also swam on a winning relay team, finished in second place with a time of 2:43.51 in the 200-yard butterfly. As for Curiel, she posted the fastest time of the day in the 50-yard freestyle (28.92), 100-yard freestyle (1:04.40) and the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:12.83.

Romero was a winner in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:12.64, while her clocking of 2:34.27 in the 200-yard backstroke won the event. Freshman Fiona Glynn (Cerritos HS) secured a first place result in both the 500-yard freestyle (6:48.08) and 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 13:48.00.  Glynn also took second place in the 200-yard backstroke when she touched up in 1:15.17.

The day opened with the foursome of Romero, freshman Sophia Wainwright (Cerritos HS), Oliveira and sophomore Valeria Barboza (Paramount HS) winning the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:07.05, while the Falcons capped off the day by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay race. That quarter of Curiel, Glynn, freshman Ana Sanchez (La Mirada HS) and freshman Jennifer Sotelo (Bellflower HS) posted a time of 4:48.02. Barboza also had a second place finish of 1:25.33 in the 100-yard breaststroke.
