In their first competition of the season, the Cerritos College women's swimming team competed in the South Coast Conference Pentathlon, which took place at East Los Angeles College. Swimmers competed in five events, with their total times resulting in individual standings. Next up for the Falcons is the Golden West Sprint Medley in two weeks.
The top finisher for Cerritos on the day was sophomore Sydney Romero (Cerritos HS/Azusa Pacific University), who's total time of 7:01.84 put her in fourth place out of the 30 swimmers who took part in all five events. Also placing in the top 10 was sophomore Camila Oliveira (Cerritos HS), who recorded a total time of 7:23.73. In all, the Falcons had six swimmers who took part in the five events.
In the 200-yard IM, Romero placed sixth overall with a clocking of 2:28.98 and was edged out of fifth place my less than one second. As for Oliviera, she was timed in 2:35.92, which put her in 17th place out of the 59 total swimmers in the event. Freshman Fiona Glynn (Cerritos HS), who came in 16th place overall on the day, posted a 29th place time in the 200-yard IM of 2:52.80.
Romero, who led Cerritos in each of the events, came in eighth place in the 100-yard butterfly and was clocked in 1:06.44, which was one second shy of advancing two places in the standings. Oliveira wasn't too far behind, as she checked in with a 12th place time of 1:09.58, while freshman Eleonor Curiel (Downey HS) turned in a time of 1:19.85 to come in 21st place out of 48 entries.
Another solid performance in the 100-yard backstroke by Romero put her in eighth place, as she was timed in 1:07.36, while Oliveira in 23rd place, as she touched up in 1:14.94. Glynn wasn't too far behind, as her 31st place result of 1:17.92 was part of three swimmers who all finished within a second of each other.
The 100-yard backstroke saw Romero finished in a close 11th place with a time of 1:19.21 and held off two other swimmers, with Glynn taking 23rd place in a time of 1:25.55.
Always to most competitive event of the day, the 100-yard freestyle put Romero as the final swimmer to compete the race in less than 1:00.00, as she came in 15th place out of 75 swimmers with a time of 59.85. Oliviera was the 15th place swimmer in the event with her clocking of 1:01.49, with Curiel back in 41st place at 1:10.08. She finished just ahead of Glynn and her 42nd place time of 1:10.54.
The Falcons also took part in a 200-yard medley relay, with the quartet of Glynn, freshman Sophia Wainwright (Cerritos HS), Oliviera and Romero turning in a fifth place time of 2:09.33 and held off Long Beach City College by less than a second.
