Led by a pair of second place finishes, the Cerritos College women's swimming team finished in fifth place at the Golden West Sprint Medley on Friday. The Falcons, who finsihed with 281 team points, will open South Coast Conference action next Friday when they travel to Mt. San Antonio College to take on the Mounties and El Camino College.
Sophomore Sydney Romero (Cerritos HS/Azusa Pacific University) earned both a second and third place finish for Cerritos on the day and amassed 47 individual points. In the 50-yard butterfly, Romero posted a personal best time of 28.11 and trailed only Iyanah Samayoa of El Camino College, who recorded a time of 27.74. The next Falcon to complete the race was freshman Eleonor Curiel (Downey HS), who turned in a seventh place time of 32.56. In the 100-yard IM, Romero registered a third place time of 1:05.67 and was edged out of second place by Emma Steffens of Orange Coast College with her time of 1:05.59.
In the 100-yard butterfly, sophomore Camila Oliveira (Cerritos HS) recorded a her personal best time of 1:06.62, good enough for second place. She was well off the place of Steffens, who won the race in 1:02.43. Curiel earned Cerritos 11 team points with her eighth place time of 1:16.50. Oliveira also turned in a solid time in the toughest race of the day, the 200-yard IM, as she touched up in 2:34.19, which put her in fourth place. She edged fifth place Mia Gonzalez of Orange Coast (2:34.83) and was two seconds off of third place.
Romero also had five other top 10 finishes, which included a fifth place result in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.81), with Oliveira adding three other top 10 finishes. Curiel also turned in the ninth best split in the 200-yard freestyle relay (30.99), while sophomore Valeria Barboza (Paramount HS) recorded the ninth best split in the 400-yard medley relay with her time of 1:27.81 during her 100-yard breaststroke. As for freshman Fiona Glynn (Cerritos HS), she swam leadoff on both the 800-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard medley relay, with her time of 2:41.71 in the 200-yard freestyle the seventh fastest and 29.99 in the 50-yard backstroke the eighth best on the day.
