Winning by the slimmest margin, the Cerritos College women's swimming team posted a 109-108 South Coast Conference win over El Camino College on Friday. Competing at Mt. San Antonio College, the Falcons also dropped a 217-41 score against the Mounties. The team will swim in the Cuesta Invitational next weekend.
Cerritos secured the team victory with their 16 points in the penultimate event, 100-yard butterfly, as they took the first three places, which earned them 16 points, compared to just two points for the Warriors. The final event saw the Falcons get the final two points needed to hold on for the win.
In the 100-yard butterfly, sophomore Camila Oliveira (Cerritos HS) won the event with a time of 1:07.27, which easily outdistanced the field. Teammates Sophia Wainwright (Cerritos HS) and Jennifer Sotelo (Bellflower HS) took the second and third place points for the Falcons. Sophomore Sydney Romero (Cerritos HS/Azusa Pacific University) won three events on the day, which included a time of 1:05.13 in the 100-yard freestyle, as well as a clocking of 26.14 in the 50-yard freestyle and 2:30.26 in the 200-yard backstroke. Oliveira turned in a second place time in the 50-yard freestyle at 27.23.
The 200-yard medley relay foursome of Romero, Valeria Barboza (Paramount HS), Oliveira and Eleonor Curiel (Downey HS) recorded a second place time of 2:06.93 against El Camino, with Barboza also checking in with a pair of second place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (2:35.16) and 200-yard breaststroke (3:08.04) against El Camino.
The best individual finish for a Falcon swimmer against Mt. San Antonio was Romero in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard backstroke, where she placed second. Oliveira also came in second place against the Mounties with her time in the 100-yard butterfly at 1:07.27.
