W. Water Polo: Cerritos continues winning ways

After opening the season with four wins at the American River Tournament, where they outscored their opponents, 64-4, the Cerritos College women's water polo team continued their dominance, as they started South Coast Conference play with an 18-1 win over host Los Angeles Trade-Tech College on Wednesday. The win improved the team's overall record to 5-0, while they will compete in the Chaffey Tournament this weekend, which will include an opportunity to face defending state champion Riverside College.

In the win on Wednesday, Cerritos scored the first 18 goals of the game and were looking for their second shutout of the season before LA Trade-Tech scored with :50 seconds left in the game. Sophomore Yuridia Vela (Schurr HS) led all scorers with five goals, while she also checked in with a season-high seven steals, with four other players scoring a pair of goals. Sophomore Katherine Gabayeron (Cerritos HS) was joined by freshmen Angelica Hernandez (El Rancho HS), Carla Harvey (Potomac Falls, VA HS) andBianca Serrano (Cerritos HS) with two goals, while freshman Sarah Gomez (Downey HS) and Harvey added three steals each. Sophomore goalkeeper Sharon Ku (Cerritos HS) was only required to make one save in the game.
