W. Water Polo: Cerritos defeats Rio Hondo, 16-5

Resuming their South Coast Conference schedule, the Cerritos College women's water polo team opened a 10-0 lead over Rio Hondo College on Wednesday and cruised to a 16-5 victory at the Falcon Aquatic Center. The win improved the team's overall record to 14-2 overall, while they improved to 4-0 in SCC play. The Falcons will now compete in the Pasadena Tournament this weekend.

In helping the team jump to to their sizable lead, sophomore Katherine Gabayeron (Cerritos HS) scored three first quarter goals and accounted for her game-high four tallies by halftime. Eight different players scored for Cerritos, with sophomore Yuridia Vela (Schurr HS) adding three goals and a pair of steals, while sophomore goalkeeper Sharon Ku (Cerritos HS) turned away six Roadrunner shots and made eight steals.

It was a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and 10-0 before Rio Hondo finally got on the board with 1:02 left in the second quarter.  The trio of Teresa Zuniga (California HS), Angelica Hernandez (El Rancho HS) and Diana Medina (Pioneer HS) all added two goals, while Carla Harvey (Potomac Falls, VA HS) and Jasmine Medina (Pioneer HS) each led the way with three assists in the win.
