W. Water Polo: Falcons open season with four straight wins

Competing in their first matches of the 2012 season, the Cerritos College women's water polo team opened with four convincing wins at the American River Tournament over the weekend. The Falcons surrendered just four goals combined over the four games, as they recorded wins over Santa Rosa Junior College (16-2) and Fresno City College (18-0) on the first day, followed by victories over San Joaquin Delta College (16-1) and American River (14-1). Cerritos (4-0) now opens South Coast Conference play on Wednesday when they travel to Los Angeles Trade-Tech College for a 3:00 p.m. contest.

In the opening game win over Santa Rosa, the Falcons jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second quarter, with freshman  Angelica Hernandez (El Rancho HS) accounting for two of those goals, as she went on to lead the team with six goals, while adding seven steals and two assists. Seven different players scored for Cerritos, while sophomore  goalkeeper Sharon Ku (Cerritos HS) made seven saves, while freshman Samantha Aguilar (Western HS) came on two post a pair of saves. Freshman Jasmine Villalpando (Montebello HS) contributed three goals and five assists, while the duo of sophomore Yuridia Vela (Schurr HS) and freshman Carla Harvey (Potomac Falls, VA HS) each added two goals.

Later that day, the team posted a rare shutout, as they blanked Fresno City with Ku and Aguilar combining for four saves. Vela and sophomore Katherine Gabayeron (Cerritos HS) each scored four times, while Hernandez found the net three times in the win. Gabayeron scored three of her goals in the first quarter, with Harvey and freshman Teresa Zuniga(California HS) each scoring twice, while Zuniga also added five steals. Sophomore Jasmine Medina (Pioneer HS) posted four assists, while Villalpando added three assists.

On the second day, Cerritos continued to dominate their opponents, as they scored the first 14 goals in a 16-1 win over San Joaquin Delta. After allowing a second quarter goal against Santa Rosa in the first game, Cerritos went nine quarters without allowing a goal, as they scored 32 straight times over the course of three games. They led San Joaquin Delta, 14-0 before the Mustangs scored in the fourth quarter, which snapped that streak. In the game, Vela (two steals), Gabayeron (five steals) and Hernandez (two steals) each scored three times, while Harvey and freshman Sarah Gomez (Downey HS) each scored twice. The tournament concluded with Hernandez leading the way over American River with five goals, while Ku turned away seven shots and Aguilar made four saves.
